Automated Viruses??

My husband has just received and e mail from a colleague saying that he thinks he is receiving automated viruses in some of the attachments we have sent.
Upon checking his "sent" box we found that e mails had gone to several people unintentionally.
He has been telling me that things are not right with his PC for a while now. What can we do to correct this? Thanks
