I have plugged my telephone cord into the back of my modem, and tried to get onto the internet but for some reason it is giving me a message that there is no dial tone, but if I was to plug the cord back to my telephone I can hear a dial tone

Just set your modem to not wait for dial tone, it depends which version of windows (if that's what you've got) as to where you do this but somewhere in control panel will be an option to set up modems and in there will be an option to disable 'wait for dial tone' In XP it's phone and modem options.

The question has to be asked however, if you can't get onto the 'net how did you post your question;-)

Fitzer is right, but if you mean you are using the cord that was supplied with your phone rather than the one supplied with the modem, not all modems and phones are wired the same way. Certain BT phones have the connections crossed, the result being that the cable will only work with that model of phone, and this also applies to some brands of modem.
yes i know i am silly.but i once plugged my phone line connection into my network card which obviously resulted in no dial tone.(i couldn't see round the back of my pc properly). ok i admit it , long time ago and a bit green.
