If you've got the basic Kindle (currently sold by Amazon for £111) , you need wi-fi access in order to be able to view web content. If you've got the Kindle 3G (which is currently sold by Amazon for £152) you can access the internet (free of charge) over the 3G mobile phone network (as well as via wi-fi) almost anywhere in the world.

hi chris thatnks - i have the £149 one. However, i want to take it into a place that for safety reasons dosen't allow 3g or wireless devices, hence i was wondering if you can load on the PDFs i'll need, then use it within the restricted areas without fear of it setting off loads of alarms etc
Question Author
or perhaps there is a way to permanently disable the wireless/3g capability?
You can load the PDFs, by converting them to Kindle format, using my link above.

However I can't think of any way of being able to satisfy security officials that the connectivity of the Kindle has been disabled.
On my cheapo kindle you just turn the wi-fi off.
Question Author
yes, you can turn it off on mine too, but the security bods would want to be satisfied that it was disabled. Clearly i need a different device. I would like t o be able to download books and documents in a portable device so that i could go onto site and have the info at my fingertips, but not have wireless capability - any ideas?
Get a cheap, refurbished laptop that doesn't have built in wi-fi access but which does enable you to connect to the internet using a dongle. Download what you want, away from the secure area, using the dongle. (Or download the stuff to another computer and then transfer it to the laptop via a USB stick).

When you visit the secure area, simply leave the dongle at home.
