Free to air tv boxes.

A friend of mine saw these for sale in b@q and seems to think he can pick up sky channels on it . I disagreed but there again I don't know about it but I don't think you could or everyone would have it and as far as I read on here you need another dish which is larger. Could someone please explain to me clearly what it is as trying to read about it on here is double dutch to me.Thanks.

Providing you have a Sky Dish you can buy a Digi Box from the likes of Maplins that will enable you to receive the Free Channels from Sky.
You can also buy Freesat Digi Box which also gives you Free Channels.

Thanks Redman but I think this is something different as I understand it comes from a different sattelite and you need a different dish which is larger.

I got a Digi Box from Maplins for an elderly Gent who lives in my Block of Flats so that he could watch the Free to Air Channels from Sky. I connected it up for him.
You don't need a bigger Dish, your existing Sky Dish will be fine providing it's in good condition along with the Cabling.

Thanks again for your time to reply. Is it just the normal freeview channels that you get on it . I have just been reading that free to air and free to view are entirely different.

freeview is from your Rooftop Terrestial Aerial.
Free to Air comes from your Satellite Dish......Sky or Freesat

freesat is the same as freeview but from a sat dish not normal aerial

Thanks deggers now a question for myself. I have sky now if I decide to cancel my subscription with sky would I still be able to pick up freeview from the sky ariel as terrestrial ariel has not got a very good reception but I use that for the other tvs in house but it has a booster on it for good picture.

Once you have completed your 12 Month contract with Sky and cancel it, you will be left with the Free to Air Channels for viewing.

You are dealing with a right thicko here .Forgot to add my room tv has freeview included.That is the one the sky ariel runs to.

Freesat channels are exactly the same channels as you see on your Sky box (with the card removed)
Same satellite(s) Same Frequencies .. Same channels.
One or two channels need a card inserted in a Sky box to watch. This can be an old Sky card .. as there are one or two still soft-encrypted (and the card is part of the unlock key)

Freeview is from a TV antenna (digital ... DTV)
Freesat is from a satellite dish (including Sky dish. Two types .. one is with a Sky box, one with a Freesat box. No difference in channels.

It IS possible that your TV has built in FreeSAT. Then the sky dish will connect to that input.
Most DTV TV's are Freeview (so you connect a standard TV antenna to it)

Thanks albags for explanation again .I have passed this info on to my friend as I could not understand but I certainly do now with all your replys.Ask me anything about spacestation and shuttles and I will tell you but a simple thing like this lol well say no more.
