If you type a website address such http://www.thisisjustanexample.com/, nothing comes up because its not registered. Does this mean I can register and own "thisisjustanexample"? If so, where? Is it free?

if the domain you want is available you can register it on that site as well.
the cost can be anything from a few pence upwards, depending on what options you require.
oops! that should be www.uk2.net
http://www.lcn.biz/ or here
The answer is that just because an address doesn't have a web site doesn't mean it is not registered. Some people use an address for email only, others haven't got around to putting up a site or are saving the address to prevent others using it.
The only way is to search one of the name databases, the others have given website where you can do this.
It costs money to register a domain name, but not much. But check what the fee covers. If you want to use teh address for a website and/or email make sure these are included in thecost.
