If I want to drive from A to B, there are websites that measure out the distance of the journey and suggest the best route.

However, if I want to walk from one side of town to another, are there sites that map these much shorter journeys out?

Google maps will do it for you - choose one location, then click on Get Directions and enter the other location. Above the locations are buttons for car, public transport, walking and bicycling.
You can use the AA Route planner and enter post codes for different parts of the town you want to walk from/to. I've just tried it and it works.

Thanks.

Tried both, but they're not what I'm looking for.

I know the route I want to take - I just want to know the distance!
I don`t know about online maps but if you have an iphone, there is an app that does that.
Google Maps lets you change the route by dragging points on the map, and the total distance is given in the summary at the top of the individual segments of the route.
if you use googe maps you can put in walking and then drag the blue line on the map to the route you want to take.

If you want to walk across fields or anything else that wouldn't normally be considered a normal route you can use google earth (the one you download, not the on-line maps) and work out the distance using the measuring tool.
How about walkit?

http://walkit.com/
With the AA Route Planner you can enter all the streets you want to visit if you want to from A to B.

VHG, that walkit site is great, but doesn't include my town only a selection of mainly cities with some larger towns. Shame.

ChuckFickens - just tried dragging the blue line on the Google Maps site and yes that does work, although only from A to B, ie doesn't work for a circular walk, eg. A to B and back to A again but via C. However, by breaking the route up into segments, it does the trick. Cheers
Dusty, try http://www.walkjogrun.net/ to create and measure routes. It opens with a US map but enter a UK location to move the map

Milvus, maybe I'm not using that site correctly, but it appears only to measure distances as the crow flies, not along roads on the maps.
Are you using the "Create a Route" button on the web page, Dusty?
