I have an E series Walkman and whilst the sound quality is excellant it is a bit on the quite side especially if I use it on the bus, is there a way of increasing the volume of this device?

Not really, but you could try:
More efficient earphones
Lower impedance earphones
Sealed Headphones

Should have said -
I had to replace the earbuds that came with my Sony recently (broke the cord).
I got these. They look a bit gay, but are much louder, clearer, and more comfortable than the originals.
