I've got an old Windows 98 PC and whenever I try to boot it up it goes through the windows screen ok and then within a few seconds of it getting to the desktop screen it freezes up and I can't use the mouse. When I first turn on the PC I have the option of going into the hardware settings is there anything I can change to on these settings to stop this happening? Thanks

Press the F8 key on boot and select safe mode. If this works ok, click start, run and type msconfig.

Select the startup tab and deselect everything, reboot.

Also delete the files from the windows\temp directory and delete temporary internet files.

If it boots ok rerun msconfig and reselect entries one at a time, if not then you are probably looking at a reinstall.

Thanks mattie I'll give that a try!
sometimes a faulty keyboard can cause a freeze-up when just booted--try another if u can--maybe borrow one from a friend
