Hi guys,

you may remember me looking before for a PC tower for my son to play Minecraft?

In the end, I didn't buy any of the recommended ones as a friend was giving us her old PC as soon as she wiped it - anyway, to cut a long story short, that isn't happening anymore and they have sold out of the one you reccomended. I found this which looks like it might be okay can you have a quick check??

I'm no expert when it comes to gaming.

The PC you've linked to has a separate graphics card (rather than just using 'on board' graphics, which is what basic PCs do). It certainly sounds good enough (512Mb rather than the minimum 128Mb in the software specification) but I can't be sure whether it actually complies with the requirement for an "ATI/Nvidia independent card that supports OpenGL 2.0". My guess is that it will be OK but, hopefully, Chuck will know more about it than I do.

Remember that the PC shown there doesn't come with any software, other than the operating system (so you'll have to install something like OpenOffice if you want to persuade your son to use his PC for his homework as well as his gaming). It also requires you to provide your own monitor.

It says it's a PCi express graphics card so it'll be either an ATI or Nvidia card (nobody else really makes consumer level graphics)... the pentium d is a dual core CPU (although an early one) and 2GB of ram is enough for XP.

For the price it doesn't look too bad and should run minecraft, don't expect it to run the latest more graphics intense games on high settings though.

Thanks both - that sounds like it's just the job - I use Open Office on our main PC so happy enough to download that and he wont really need too much more I think. I guess it won't last too long if his gaming appetite increases, but at age 11, I think that is about as much as we should be spending. We already have the screen, keyboard etc so I think that is us sorted!! Little brother will be happy too as he is inheriting the netbook.

Machine arrived today and No1 son is a happy boy - lag has gone completely so he is back on minecraft. I've left him downloading skype so he can chat to his friends!! Little bro is happy too as the netbook is now safely in his paws!!
