hTc Wildfire problem

Just bought a wildfire, problem in updating it, the sync software keeps telling me there's no phone connected. Have tried variuos usb ports on the PC, but nothing happens. The lead charged the phone up ok, and i have the usb logo on the phones screen. Any ideas, please?

I have a Wildfire and update software my going through settings/about phone / system software updates. While connected to internet via Wifi. see page 182 http://dl4.htc.com/we...8_Buzz_HTC_WWE_UM.pdf

See page 28 regarding connecting phone to computer. First time I did it I'd left it at charge only so it didn't show a connection.
