Unlocking contracted phone

I'm with Vodafone españa, and have a HTC wildfire, can I get it unlocked so can use another sim when in England, (I am still going to pay contract in spain). I mean will they know and will they object?

Are you sure it's actually locked? I most contract phones in the UK aren't locked anymore (not sure about over there)

But yes you can get it unlocked and no they wouldn't know (or care)

If I out in anotgher sim (ie Spanish Yoigo or English Oragne) and it is not unlocked will it bugger up the phone? I want to try it.

if you get any prompts about updating settings for the new sim just decline them if it's only a temporary test, the new settings are only for text messaging and internet, just making a call will confirm if the phones locked or not.

Most not locked ? I must have been unlucky when I bought someone's upgrade on eBay then. :-(

Generally speaking once unlocked the handset will work on any network (i.e. with any provider's SIM card) and whilst the provider you are using will know what sort of handset you are using, the company who locked the handset won't have a clue.

Naturally you have to use the handset in a country where providers support the system and frequency your handset uses though. Spain and UK is no problem.

Putting another providers SIM into your phone will not harm anything. It will not connect to a network (emergency numbers may be an exception) but it isn't in anyone's interest to have the handset ruined simply because you "inadvertently" put in the wrong SIM card.
