Old type DVD recorder

We have a DVD recorder that no longer works because it's not digital. We need to buy a new recorder but what I am not sure about is does the new one have to have built in freeview even though our TV already has built in freeview. I know absolutely nothing about all this new fangled digital stuff but what I do know is that I would like a recorder that uses a hard drive and also can record to DVD discs for watching on other DVD players. I need help but need it put simply so I can understand it, also any do's & dont's and things to look out for. Thanks, Kath.

Yes you do need a combined receiver with recorder (calle a PVR nowadays)
DVD recorders are a lot more technical, and good ones are a lot more expensive.
If you want a PVR (without DVD maker) buy a Humax .. maybe PVR9300T
If you are sure you want DVD recording, it would probably need to be a Panasonic .. expensive but reasonably reliable. Don't expect any of the DVD recorders to be particularly easy to use tho ..

Note the DVD recorder will still work.

It is just that the TV tuner inside it is analogue so you can record anything using that TV tuner.

But you can still play DVDs with it.

Of the DVD recorders available (with both hard-drive and DVD-drive), Panasonic is the one to go for. Reliable, excellent picture quality and easier to use than most.
If you have a Richer Sounds store handy, I can recommend them ( and they are the retailer that Which? gives top marks to).

Another make is Toshiba. I've a DVD/VHS/HDD combo with a digital tuner, it's about three years old and have had no problems. Quite easy to use as well.

But kitty, just because the DVD recorder you have is not digital does not mean you cannot use it. You should be able to connect a DIGIBOX to it and record that way. However if you but an all-in-one such as the one in the link it will be easier to use.

Thankyou all, you have been very helpful and I could understand what everyone was talking about. I think I will go to Currys tomorrow and see what they have and get all the info and then go to Argos to buy one, thats the only problem with Argos that you can't actually see the products. Is there a Smart Blu ray Player with a DVD Recorder which records onto Discs AND Hard Drive? All the ones I have found so are either Not Smart or record onto Hard Drive only....or am I looking for something that only exists in my small mind,,,,Doh! Any help would be gratefully received, Thanks in advance
