Why is it when I type something in a search engine and highlight the UK box I  still get US results

Unfortunately, it is the way that the search engine works - it cannot be that specific. I assume from the question that you are using google, and there *is* a way to get google to just show .co.uk sites, and that is if after your query, you add the filter

site:co.uk

so if you were looking for used cars, but only wanted those with a co.uk suffix, then you would use

used cars site:co.uk

of course, this has the downside of disregarding all the british sites that use the .com domain (and any others, for that matter) - but hope this partially solves your question....
