For some reason my laptop suddenly won't download any pdf documents. Anyone know a reason this has happened when I could always do it before. Laptop has been playing up recently (keep getting the microsoft box popping up asking do I want to report error).
It's quite common for Adobe Reader to stop communicating properly with your browser. Try the following:
Close your browser.
Go to Start > Programs > Adobe Reader
Go to Edit > Preferences
Click on 'Internet'
Click to remove the tick alongside 'Display PDF in browser'
Click 'OK'
Close Adobe Reader.
Now try downloading a PDF document. You should find that it will now open in its own window (rather than within your browser's window) but that shouldn't be a problem anyway.
I found this a while back. Eventually I realised that at the bottom of the screen is a box (with yellow top) asking "Do you want to open or save (pdf file name) ... ", I then have to click "Open" or "Save".
This is the box that usually has a message "Speed up browsing by disabling add-ons". I'm not sure whether this is a feature of Internet Explorer, seemed to appear when I upgraded to IE9.
If my method doesn't work it suggests that your laptop had lost the 'file association', so that it doesn't know which program to use to view Pdf documents.
While it's possible to fiddle around with the settings within Windows to try to fix the problem, it might be easiest to uninstall Adobe Reader and to then reinstall it. Alternatively, run System Restore to take your laptop's registry back to a date before it lost the file association.
Still no joy I'm afraid. I've uninstalled Adobe Reader but when I go to install it again I get a message which says "install_reader10_uk_air_mssa_aih.exe is not a valid Win32". Anything else I can try please?
We've gone the long way round to get to what Chuck would probably suggest anyway ('cos he's a great fan of this software): Install Foxit Reader:

I'm just trying System Restore first so using notebook at moment. If that doesn't work then will try that next Chris. Thanks for all your help. I may be back.... watch this space.
