For more obscure file types (ape, shn, flac) I need to use WinAmp as WMP doesn't like them. As much as it's fashionable to detest Microsoft, I'd use it for every file type if I had the choice.
Almost forgot the "system resources" bit! The 3 obscure file types I mentioned are compressed and need to be decompressed "on the fly" to be played. This takes system resources so if you're playing a heavily compressed "ape" file, this'll take more system resources than a wav file.
I've no idea what a comparison between the 2 players just playing some normal mp3's would be but I thought I'd baffle you with science a little and patently not answer your question!

Winamp running the classic skin would use less resources than WMP I think. Using the new skins, it might nudge up resources to roundabout the WMP mark.
I prefer Winamp, simply for nostalgia's sake really. It was what I used in the hay day of Napster. It was part of the mp3 revolution. I'll move on to something else sooner or later, seeing as AOL have broken the Winamp team down. Think some of them went to iTunes so maybe that's where I'll end up.

The difficulty of using Winamp 5 is highly variable. It all depends on the skin you use. I prefer winamp mainly because the plug in's allow massive amounts of upgrades. they can be to upgrade your equalizer. due to this the sound quality of a upgraded Winamp surpasses WMP by far. The only thing Winamp could do with is a sync device to connects to a mp3 player
