Laptop not detecting my CD burner

I have recently installed Microsoft's SP2 - since then (and whether it has anything to do with it or not) I cannot burn any CD's.  When I try I just get a message (via Media Play 10) that a CD/DVD burner is not detected.  I definately have one and have used it before on a number of occasions.  Now it's not working.  Any ideas?  My laptop is only about a year old so I don't think it has burned out! Oh I've also tried using my Nero 6 package and that doesn't work either.
