I have just bought a new computer and some of the keys are typing different to what it says on the key. I have changed the batteries but to no avail. Any ideas or do I repack the whole shebang and take it back

Check the language settings in your control panel are set to the correct country.

Of course, as you've failed to mention anything at all about the computer and what version of windows it is then it's hard to advice any further.

As others have correctly noted, this will be your "locale" settings.

You don't mention whether the computer is running Windows, MacOS or one of the several flavours of Linux, so Windows is assumed.

If you hold down the Shift key and type the keys from 1 to 0 under the function keys, what do you get? Once you have configured the machine for UK settings, you should see this:

Just as a long shot, though, you have actually bought a computer with a UK keyboard, haven't you? I.e. the first line of letters should be:

QERTYUIOP

It is a windows 7 with a uk keyboard . the " key types @ and vice versa and the £ has changed to #. I have changed the keyboard uk from us settings but it is still the same

It sounds like it is still on US layout to me.
What did you do to change the keyboard driver settings ?

You obviously haven't changed the layout if it's not changed.

Remove the US details all together and just leave the UK layout in the locale settings and then do a restart.
