Recovering images

If I have accidentally formated a memory card because my computer told me to, is there any way to get the photos back? I downloaded Recover My Files, but it doesn't regognise any data at all. Does Windows write over the data during a format?

No, if it's just been formatted and nothing else written to the drive they should be recoverable...

Whilst there are some specialist date recovery companied who claim to be able to recover files in situations like these, they are very expensive. Think £1000 minimum.

Even then they can't guarantee to find the information you need.

You probably need to consider them as lost.

Just read chucks reply. That software would be ok if the file had been deleted, but formatting is a deeper wipe.

I've recovered images from formatted memory cards on several occasions with no trouble at all.

OK Thanks for the answers. I guess i will try with Recuva. Maybe the different software work in different ways? Is Recuva the best free one then ChuckF?

I'd generally use testdisk for linux to do it but I have used recuva with success and it's often suggested on here and people report back it's worked. I've also used software called getback before with very good results but I no longer have a licence for it (don't work in the same place as I did when I used it)
