Wifi for TV

A Sony TV will work just fine with a RJ45 ethernet cable connected straight from the computer Modem/router. To nake it a wireless connection one needs to spend a small fortune to get a proper plugin Sony dongle.

Is there a wireless receiver available that connects to the TV via an ethernet cable? I have a couple of the older type computer wifi receivers but they need to have software installed, which of course is not possible on a TV.

To make it clearer, I don't like to have a cable across the room if possible. The receiver can be placed behind the TV to be unobstructive.
