I am a pro doinb weddings with Nikon gear and I use flash all the time for fill in and balance etc and I get at least 350 to 400 shots out of one set.
I use Aldi's cheap and work fine.
Get the highest powered ones as they do differ. Mine are 2300mah.

"Standard" NiMHs do lose charge fairly quickly, but newer types are available which retain 75 - 85% of charge after 12 months. Which type to go for depends on usage patterns.
