Being a skinflint, I tried a pair costing less than £1 and got what I paid for – a cr@p pair of headphones, the bass distortion had to be heard to be believed.
I then decided that if I wanted a passable sound, I would have to pay more – and purchased a pair of JVC Gumy plus in ear headphones (model HA-FX5-B), I suspect the B denotes the colour black (circa £8).
I can report that when driven hard with boosted bass, there is very little noticeable distortion. However I am using them with my PC – plugged into the output of the powered speakers. These speakers have bass and treble controls, allowing tonal adjustment to correct the headphones and my sound preference. Also at full volume, the PC speaker output would destroy the earphones.
The headphones come with interchangeable in ear-pieces, allowing selection of the most comfortable inner ear size to suit each individual.
If I did not have the ability to adjust the input bass and treble – I would be concerned as to the tonal quality of any headphones. And knowing that the input source level would not be an issue helps (some headphones are just not sensitive [loud] enough).
Based on my experience of in–ear types, I would definitely give them consideration. But don’t spend significantly less than £10 or you will be disappointed.

As Hymie pointed out, you (don't) get what you (don't) pay for.
