My printer is set up on my laptop, but not as a wireless printer. So when I need to print I have to take laptop upstairs and connect by USB.

I feel brave enough to attempt to set it up properly now, but not sure how to begin.

Would I need to uninstall the printer as it stands at the moment and start from scratch, or can I alter how the existing printer is set up without the need to un-install?

You should already have the drivers installed from when you first used it.
There should be a button on the printer for the wireless. Then go into
control panel - printers - and there will be a tab saying Add printer then just follow the instructions!
