I am running Win XP and this morning whist browsing the Internet the page I was looking at suddenly disappeared and a message in a box came up saying "Warning your browser is seriously out of date and needs updating now, To update with the latest version click the download button now" Needless to say I totally ignored it then ran a "Malwarebytes" check which came up with nothing so is this a scam and if it is how does it override the page you are viewing?

What browser are you using?
IE are starting to warn users they need to update so it might have been that.

Sorry daffy654, yes it is IE but I am still highly suspicious!
IE do not give you a pop up warning you you are 'seriously out of date', it comes as an update warning and will either ask you to update or will auto update how ever you have updates set up
Don't click on anything that tells you you have this and that in the way you have described
Use the update facility to see if IE does have any updates
In that case, go to Windows update and scan for new updates, if the results show a browser update, select it and install. If the message you had was from IE then it won't appear again. :)

Thanks for your advise everybody, it looks like it was a scam after all, various people reporting on other forums that once downloaded it installs a virus that you cant get rid of unless you pay them to uninstall it.
have you got a pop up blocker and is it turned on?
