Mathematical Software

Does anyone know of a mathematical software programme (preferable free) or indeed any sort of clever 'tweek' which will allow me to use 'Half line spacing' when needed in order to enter mathematical equation data correctly.
I'm using XP.
At the moment an equation such as for instance 2x + 4y divided by 7 can only be entered with normal spacing which puts the dividing line and the = sign out of normal alignment (as it would be if written on paper) with unnatural spacing.
Using the forward slash for 'divide by' is not an option.
If it can be done, when printed out it must look exactly as if it is written on say, an exam paper.

MS Word has tool called 'Equation Editor' This may help you.

In Word 2007 you can select Insert then you get the choice of Symbol or Equation. Have a play with Equation

Thank you both (Howard & Factor30) for taking the trouble to answer my question and I have now looked but I'm afraid that my version of Word(which came as part of my 'Office Professional 97') is, like me, to old and doesn't have the facility that you both recommended but thanks for trying maybe someone else with have an idea.
