Hi - Now I understand how to use the sky + box I have had it for some years - but having a debate one evening a relative of mine announced, that he always thought the recorded tv in the planner was stored in the box it's self - but now he had just found out that it is actually "stored" at the sky "headquarters" so to speak - I had never wondered where the recording is before and it got me thinking ??? Where is it !!

I have had occasion to ring sky more than once - to rest set my box and when the operator leads me through the instructions there always comes a point when they say "by doing the next operation - you will lose all the recorded programmes in your planner" - now if the recording was indeed at the sky "headquarters" then surely they could save it and restore the planner - so my relatives argument does not hold up -
Where are the recordings??

Your recordings are held on the Sky+ box.

Sky Anytime is also stored on your Sky+ box, which is why it's only possible on Sky+, not standard Sky. Anytime is downloaded in the background to your hard drive ahead of time, and is then available to watch as if you'd recorded it yourself.

As you choose what you record and you have a certain amount of space it is saved on your box. There is another section 'anytime' where you can watch programmes you haven't taped, these would be stored at the 'headquarters' and when you click on them you will notice it takes a few seconds to start, this is because it is being streamed from there and takes a few seconds to start the signal.

There's no way that the satellite has the bandwidth to stream in real time based on individual demand, whether it's Anytime content or stuff you've chosen to record yourself.
And what I feel is a right rip-off is that stuff I recorded before I stopped my Sky subscription can't be viewed any more. Just reinforced the decision I formed that Sky are b*stards, I'm much better off with Freeview.
The hard drive of the box is essentially split in two. One part records what you tell it, the other part records 'Anytime' programmes usually in the wee small hours when your box is dorment. The only stuff 'kept at Sky HQ' is when you stream over the internet.
To be charged simply to record and view programmes is a disgrace and one of the reasons I too cut the Sky cord.
I will never pay for TV again.
The programs in your Sky box are held on a computer hard disk, the same as that used in a computer.

In fact some people buy a new larger hard disk and replace the one in their Sky box so they can record more programs before running out of space.
>>>Just reinforced the decision I formed that Sky are b*stards,

Yes terrible isn't it.

You stop paying them money then they stop you using the features you were paying for previously.

They are not a charity you know.
They must be on the box, when I got a new box, I lost all my recordings, the installer said you can't transfer them from box to box, if they were in the 'sky', then surely you'd still be able to get them.
Doh, should have refreshed the page from the night before.
