Transfering Kindle Books

Up to recently, I have had Kindle reader on my laptop, and I have purchased quite a few books.
I have now purchased an ebook reader ( not Kindle).
Is there any way I can transfer these books from my laptop to the new reader?.
I have tried downloading them to a micro SD card, but no joy.
Is this allowed, and if so how would I do it?

Different ebook readers use different formats so you probably need to use a program that can convert from one format to another, such as Calibre.

Thanks for the link bravejordy. I have downloaded Calibre, but so far I have had no luck, but I will try again tomorrow.

It does take a bit of getting used to but once you get the hang of it, it's brilliant! My niece has an Elonex ebook reader which uses EPUB format and a friend gave her a data disc filled with 100s of ebooks but they were in Kindle format (MOBI?). Long story short, I converted all those books to EPUB format using Calibre, which she was then able to load onto her Elonex. Admittedly the conversion process can take a while if you have lots of books to do, but it's worth it. ;)

Thanks, bravejordy, I have a Kobo Vox reader and that is also uses EPUB format, but my trouble is getting the books that are stored in my Kindle reader (on my laptop) onto a mini SD card. Once I have done that I am not anticipating any problems downloading to my Kobo.
I am wondering if Amazon put some kind of block on their books to prevent them being downloaded to a different reader.
