contention ratio. if the internet provider is sending 24mbs, and all 50 users,
( assuming a contention ratio of 50/1 ) are on line at the same time, would this account for speeds of 500kbs in the evenings and 1.5 mbs during the day? it seems strange that when i was with pipex my speed was constant at about 1.8 mbs, but since talk talk took them over the speed has dropped to this abysmal level. can it be that talk talk have more customers than pipex had and they now have the maximum 50 users to each card in the exchange? also now that love film and netflix are advertising at £5. per month for continuous online downloads can it be that every one is online all night?? Is it worth complaining or will i have to live with it?

thanks wiltsman, i was hoping for a little more info, as I am lost myself.
IT doesn't quite work like that. (well it would if there was no traffic shaping and/or all 50 people were trying to stream priority media at the same time)

but to answer your question without going into technical details, yes more users could explain your slower speeds.
