Screen gone on lappy

The screen has gone on my Acer Aspire laptop. Everything still appears to start up ok but nothing comes up on the screen.

A friend suggested that i may be able to run a seperate monitor by plugging it to the laptop and pressing the F4 button.

Would this work and what cable would i need. ?

Without wishing to sound facetious, you'd need a monitor cable to connect a monitor and if you plug the external monitor in before turning the laptop on it should automatically display on it.

that said, a replacement screen would probably be less that £50, and it's not that hard a job to fit them.
