I bought a cheap and cheerful headset for my pc but i cant get it to recognise the mic.so i am looking at buying a usb headset to see if that will solve the problem but the cheapest i can find is approx �50.

does anyone know of a cheaper set anywhere ?

I had this problem before realizing that there were hidden setup places in Windows that had switched the mic to zero level. Have a snoop around via Accessories and Control Panel. It's pretty unlikely that it's just bust, and a Sound card would probably be a cheaper option if that's all that's broken. They are very cheap.

If the mic plugs into the pink mic socket on the back of your sound card, then it's completely standard, and unless your mic is actually broken then the signal will be being stopped at your sound card. Bring up your system volume and unmute the mic. You can open this by double clicking on the speaker style icon in your system tray (near the clock)

If you can't see Mic / Microphone in the settings, then open Advanced Settings (Options > Advanced or something similar, unfortunately I don't have the windows standard volume mixer) and select the check the Mic option to show it in the mixer.
