What are these used for on a keyboard? Why are they there? They are very annoying to non-typists like me.

Moaic, there must be something to use square brackets for
[] are still used in newspapers for the editor/reporter to add a comment into the middle of a quote, quite often to indicate that a misuse of words was from the speakers mouth not due to a typo.
I also used them in my post, bibblebub
so do I in some explanations of the answers to cryptic clues

¬ key is often used by pc gamers to access the console and enter game specific commands to alter how the game runs on their machine or make changes to their config files.
Jno, - square brackets are used in digitising historic archives for the bits wot you can't read clearly...this much I know.
To add to my 'sadness' quotient I can tell you that [] are the TACL equivalent to | in Unix, in that they are used to pass the result of one command into another.
