The message just stops and I can't hang on forever so don't hear any options.

It should automatically delete after 10 days. You get a text asking you if you want to listen or delete or something along those lines. I just ignore my voicemails as I'm too mean to spend my credit on listening to them.
My first provider had free retrieval of voicemails, since it was to their benefit that the caller made a call and left the message, as they were charged for it. I was amazed when I changed provider to find this wasn't commonplace, so simply turned the VM off. I don't pay for someone else's call, which effectively is what a VM retrieval is. Provider's loss, if the caller doesn't opt to call again.
