anyone know, as something's changed and don't know how to get it back.
What browser do you use?
i do not have too much knowledge
but is there not a function where you could 'set home page as'?
you could then set it for google
Question Author
use firefox, it's just little box in the right hand corner, no i am technically minded either.
On Chrome you click the spanner in the top right corner. Scrolls down to settings...then go down to search.
Question Author
that little box with the spanner now has ask.com in it, where it was google before. If you click on the spanner it opens out ask.com. So i need to find out how to get back to Google.
Question Author
not sure, but think i have found how to put it back.
Try going to Google page and then somewhere it may say "make this your homepage" Good luck.
How to manage the search engines in Firefox http://kb.mozillazine.org/Search_Bar - click on the small down arrow at the left of the search box and click on an entry to remove it or move it up the list.

i did something, not quite sure what, but it's back to google. Thanks for the advice people.
For future reference, you switch between search engines (on Firefox) by clicking the little black (downward-pointing) triangle immediately to the left of where you enter your search term at the top-right of your screen. (That opens a drop-down menu).
To remove toolbar from your computer, please refer to following steps:

For IE browser,
1), Open Internet Explorer. Go to Tools → Manage Add-ons,
2), Select Search Providers, First of all, choose Bing search engine or Google search engine and make it your default web search provider (Set as default).
3), Then select Search Results and click Remove to remove it,
4), Go to Tools → Internet Options. Select General tab and click Use default button or enter your own website, e.g. google.com instead of ask.com. Click OK to save the changes. And that's about it.

For Google Chrome:
1) Click on Customize and control Google Chrome icon and select Settings,
2) Choose Basic Options. Change Google Chrome homepage to google.com or any other and click the Manage search engines... button,
3) Select Google from the list and make it your default search engine;
4) Select Search Results from the list remove it by clicking the "X" mark to delete the ask.com

For Firefox:
1) Open Mozilla Firefox. Click on the magnifying glass search icon and select Manage Search Engines...
2) Choose Search Results from the list and click Remove to remove it. Click OK to save changes.
3) Go to Tools → Options. Under the General tab reset the startup homepage or change it to google.com, etc.
