Camcorder visual defect

I have a new-ish camcorder, it is a sony digital handycam. Until recently it had been working fine. Now when I turn it on I dont even see what I am looking at. If I look through the viewfinder or the side panel I see nothing. I can play back a video on it and see it, so its not a problem with the screen or viewfinder, its just when I look through it as if I want to record what I am viewing say, It shows no picture, its just blank, and yes I did take the lens cap off, so no funny answers please. Is this a specific problem somone out there knows the answer to or have i pressed a button I should not have? Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks
