tunnelling error

I think I saw recently a TV programme about a railway tunnel that was being dug from either end. Because the two tunnels did not meet in the middle the railway company ended up with two, parallel, tunnels. The engineer or architect in charge was so shocked that he committed suicide. Can anyone give me more details? Like, is this story acrually true and not afigment of my imagination, and if true, where, when, who etc

Chuck has given you the answer. However I cannot resist telling the story about two miners from my part of the world (South Wales) who submitted a tender for the Channel tunnel. The idea was that each of the miners would start from either end.(France/England)

However when questioned by the adjudication panel about them not meeting in the middle, Dai replied and said..."No problem..You'll have two for the price of one."

Thanks for giving me the reference Chuck. Now here's another question: how do you define the 'straightest tunnel in the world'? That is the epithet accorded to Barog's tunnel. But surely straightness is absolute and cannot be compared. Like that other over-used word 'unique'. It either is straight, or unique, or it ain't! Any other comments?
