Time to get an iPhone

OK its about time. I want to get an iPhone. I have a 'normal' mobile Nokia at the moment. I want something easy to use, to make calls easily obviously, good camera, battery lasting a fair while, what would you recommend? I have an Orange contract phone, at the moment I am paying £15 per month and don't want to spend a lot more ... also do I need to take out any insurance in case it breaks?? Any advice gratefully received, I have never used an iPhone and am not technical at all .. thanks all.

I'll be interested, I'm thinking of getting one next time I'm due an upgrade. And yes to the insurance, unless you get phone insurance free with your bank account.

I used to pay £18 for my contract (Orange), got my iPhone 3GS and it went up to £22 per month, you may be able to get it a bit cheaper if you haggle a bit. I doubt you will get a 4 or 4S without a significant increase in price. I love my iPhone.

I didn't take insurance as it can be quite pricey, the screen is vulnerable but easily protected with a case.

samsung....they are just as good as an iphone, but don't cost an arm or a leg. great fun, cheap on tariff/payg and loads of apps.

You can disable cellular data when you are out if you dont use your internet, email or notifications while you are out. this will prevent your ISP charging you the £1 per day

on an iphone you would press
settings>general>network>switch off cellular data.

of course that applies to pay and go, I would imagine with a contract you will have already paid for internet as part of your tariff

I have tried the samsung and I wasnt all that impressed with it, I also found it very battery hungry

Personally blackberrys are good, decent enough camera, good internet tariffs, if you want an insurance thats okay but I know that my daughter got a blackberry and if it ever broke she could bring it back to the place where she bought it and it would be fixed!

Go for the Samsung S2, cheaper and if you look at the stats (last time I checked) Samsung was kicking Apples A**!!! I have the S3 and although it is awesome it has some bugs which will hopefully be fixed with the new operating system coming out in a few weeks!

Smurfchops, it's unclear when you say "iPhone" whether you really mean an Apple iPhone, or simply a smarthphone.

I have had a Samsung Galaxy S for almost two years and will be upgrading to an S3 later this year. Son has an iPhone 4S. Both are great but the Android (Samsung) comes at a lower cost.

If you really want an iPhone, though, then get an iPhone. We paid £299 for son's iPhone 4S, which means he pays an £18.50 tariff every month - that's on O2. I'm sure you could do similar or even better with Orange. It's a question of balancing initial price, contract length and taiff. You can get an iPhone "free" if you're prepared to pay £40+ per month for the tariff.

Ive had three. One i broke, one stolen, and i LOVE IT, ill be upgrading to the 5 when its out. Id never have another phone!

I have a contract with "3" for £35/month
I don't call or text much but find the unlimited
Internet invaluable. News papers - football - cricket
movies - live tv it's all there. My other half uses a
TomTom satnav where you pay for the updates ,
mine's a free app. which updates itself and is better.
Play your music through the iPhone and run the satnav
Inconjunction , couldn't be better.
I don't know anyone that owns an IPhone who's not
thrilled to bits with it.

Surely the tech of what you iPhone owners speak is app based and therefore available on other smartphones?
I own an HTC (but barely use it) and it was available at a fraction of the cost of an iPhone and does everything I could wish for and more.
I get that iPhones are cool but in comparisons rarely come top as 'best phone'.
