The set top box for my cable TV gets quite hot when just on stand-by. When I go away for ten days I want to leave the box actually switched on and set to a certain channel so that I can receive and record programmes on this channel in my absence. Will the box get any hotter due to this activity and will it pose a danger from the heat it generates ?

Sounds a poor sort of standby if it uses that much power and converts it to heat.

I guess it depends on the design of the box. It if is designed to get that hot and no more, then risk is minimal. If it is supposed to run cool then there is an issue and a larger risk. Does the manufacturer have a Customer Service offer on their website where you may ask questions ?
Best switch it OFF if you are concerned about overheating.
Small price to pay but at least your House wont burn down whilst you are away.
If your Set Top Box seems to get excessively hot, consult your Cable supplier about it
