What do i have to check to overcome my PC being so slow recently?? The initial startup is slow going from one site to another is slow, even clicking on something on the same site is slow. What used to be a 2-3 second time lag is now nearer 20 seconds,it's driving me up the wall. Thanks in anticipation!!!

How old is tye PC?
Which operating system do you use?
When did you last clean the interior of the PC case? (Dust removal!) Especially round the CPU cooler.
Have you gone through the usual 'maintenance' jobs?
e.g. Reboot your router. It isn't on an extension cable is it?
Check your ISP is not having problems at the exchange.
Go to All programs/Accessories/System tools/Disk Cleanup. Then Defrag.
You could also try running chkdsk C: /r
Hope this helps.

The PC is 3yrs old,I'm using Vista.I have never cleaned the inside are there certain thing I should be careful about?I do all the main'ce jobs each week. The router is direct to the PC.I'll try the last bit later. Thanks!!!
Codswallop I have the same problem, my PC is Vista just lately it's been really slow or freezing and message banner across the bottom of the screen saying 'answerbank/google/internet explorer has stopped working, retrieve webpage?' It drives me potty too, not being technically minded. It seems worst since I uploaded IE9.
Are you by any chance using Firefox as your browser with a lot of 'Add-Ons'.

It's purely a guess; you could be using up a lot of the computers resources because of 'add-ons'

I am not a Techie, but the more info which you give will assist those who are. (eg. Computer and model number; Browser; Add-ons; etc. Vista being your Operating System.)

bill....I am not saying that you are wrong, but how does a registry cleaner decide what is rubbish when one may not wish certain files to be removed in a 'clean-up' job.

Ron.
there are so many reasons that this PC could be slow that iits unlikely to be caused by just one thing more likely a combination.

Experience has taught me that in the end its better to just back up your files and do a complete re-install than wasting time trying to track down multiple problems all affecting each other.

out of interest what size is your Hard Drive and how much space is there still free on it and also how much memory does your computer have.

Most registry cleaners/fixers are waste of time, they can actually cause more problems than they solve.

Is it just browsing thats slow or everything you do on the PC ?
Download and run MalwareBytes as you could have a virus or malware infection which can make your computer run slow.

Hi rccatnap I tried the latter half of your post but with no noticeable improvement.
I am using Firefox, when accessing the add-ons how do I get rid of those not needed, and how do I decide which ones?
My h/drive had 560GB with half still untouched.Where do I find the amount of memory?Thank you all for your replies but as implied I haven't found an answer yet!!!!!!!

PS 4GB of memory 1.4 GB used.If this goes any slower it will be better if I wrote a letter
I think you might find this is a problem with your internet speed if it is only a problem when browsing the web. Try unplugging your modem/router, wait a few minutes and plug back in. If there is still no difference ring your internet provider and ask them to check if there is a fault in the network.
Firefox

Addons can be found under 'Tools/Addons' disable them all and see what happens, if that gets you back to normal, then re-enable them one at a time to find the 'guilty' party.

To find out your memory go to 'Start' and type 'sysinfo' or 'system properties' (cannot remember which is right for Vista!) in the 'Run' box. Click on the result and you will get details of you pc.

Don't bother about using Registry Editors, cause more trouble than they're worth and are not to be used lightly. Windows copes quite well with an untidy registry.

As advised by others run a scan with AntiMalwarebytes free. You can do a Disk cleanup as well it all helps.

How many processes start up when you start your pc?
OK got your memory at 4Gb, thats fine.

If it's only slow on internet, then it's probably connection issues.
You could also try downloading the free version of CCleaner:
http://www.piriform.com/CCLEANER

Once installed run the program, select the 'cleaner' tab and click 'analyze' at the bottom of the screen. Once it has finished scanning click the 'run cleaner' button in the bottom right of the screen.
Check your Internet speeds and report back. Click the following:-

I can't see a way to disable the add-ons or how to get them back if wanted!!
On Firefox go to Tools/Options/Extensions.

Have you tried downloading Firefox over you old settings; it usually works for me.
Sorry Tamborine to correct you. It's Tools->Add-ons which gives the page to remove/disable the items in question.
