vga cable problem

I am trying to watch a film from my laptop on my big Sony telly. bought the vga cable, but every time i try to press the Fn + 1 of the f keys, my laptop screen goes black!! any suggestions

Are you using the right key combo. I think mine is Ctrl + F5 to bring up the second screen

just as i thought,no difference.
i wonder if my pc is on the way out, had it almost 3 years, and more or less use it every day. As i said b4, as soon as i connect the vga to my laptop the screen blacks out.

What make and model of computer is it? I believe I have seen on here that it usually has something to do with a key that has a sort of double rectangle symbol on it.
