If I buy a new iPhone, 4G, from, e.g. Marks or John Lewis, what do I have to do to get it to actually work as a phone, pay as you go? Buy a sim card? From whom? Does it come with a sim card? It would be a straightforward purchase with no contract involved. (My present phone is 8 years old and I am completely out of date.)

There is no such thing as an iPhone 4g, there is a 4 or a 4S.

You need a PAYG micro sim with a data allowance to be able to use the internet features on it all the main providers do iphone suitable sims

However, the iPhone5 is due to be announced/released tomorrow so you'd be better of waiting a week or so and either getting a 5 or takeing advantage of the inevitable price drop in the 4s
If you want payg then you sometimes there will be a sim for a provider in the box, sometimes not. Either way you don't have to use it, take a look at the payg tarriffs that are available for iphone and choose the one that suits you. You then get the sim from the payg provider and buy your first top up ay the same time.
when I had payg I used O2 and was very happy with it.

Last question. M&S are offering a iphone 4, 32gb, for £229.00. Does that sound unbelievably cheap??
>There is no such thing as an iPhone 4g

He did not say it was the iPhone 4G, he said

iPhone, 4G (comma in between)

I think he means the 4G phone service
>>>M&S are offering a iphone 4, 32gb, for £229

No they are not.

They are offering the iPod touch 32Gb for £229, which is a totaly different thing.

You wont be able to make any phone calls on that.
