I think you may be right.

The editors and writers from those days have long gone.

And with all the problems of phone hacking and other issues thrown at the Murdoch papers recently they probably need some internal cleansing.

Time for a full apology.

Kelvin MacKenzie is still very much in the media these days, popping up here and there giving his opinions on all sorts of issues. And yet it has taken until today for him to apologise for the headline for which he was directly responsible (as revealed by the reporter who wrote the story).

as I said on another thread I feel (unwillingly) sorry for the paper and its editor: they published what the police chief and local MP told them. Other papers printed some of the allegations too, though much less luridly.

Note that McKenzie did apologise before, some years ago, though maintaining - correctly, it seems - that they had the story on good authority.

On the Radio Four news tonight, they confirmed that both the current Editor and Kelvin Mackenszie had offered full apologies, and as advised, Mackensie reiterited his stance that he acted on what he believe was accurate information.

It is a terrible business, and I do hope that where possible, legal action is taken.
