Help! My computer is infected. This looks very like Live Security Platinum, which I removed a little while ago. Does anyone know about this one and how to get rid of it?

Sorry, but you are speaking nonsense. Free MalwareBytes doesn't stop you running anything - not even malware. It does nothing until you ask it to perform a scan.
The most likely reason you can't install it, is that the trojan monitors what you are trying to install and prevents you from installing anything that might try to remove it. That's why it's a good idea to keep MalwareBytes permanently on your system.
You may be able to install it if you rename the installation file to something else before trying to run it. The ideal would be to install it in safe mode, but if you are running XP, that's not possible, because the Windows Installer Service is disabled in safe mode.
Another way of getting it to install is if you can stop the trojan process from running. You can attempt that from within the Task manager, processes page.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a dummy - how do I stop the Trojan running from the Taskmanager processes page? I am running XP.
The site told me to rename the .exe file to explorer.exe, which I did. But I'm not able to install. I get a message directing me to a Microsoft page, but the instructions are a bit above my head. Tired as well, which doesn't help.

download on to a usb stick RKILL and run it from outside your computer this will stop the malware from running .Now download MalwareBytes on to the same stick and run it from outside your infected computer. You will have to use another computer which is not infected to get these programs. I see that you are using XP which is 16% more times of getting infected than if you were using Windows 7 which is 6.1% for 32 bit and 2.1% for 64 bit.

For those who say I was foolish to uninstal Malwarebytes, I did it for a good reason. It wasn't the paid version, I used it to uninstall the virus, but then I couldn't access one or two websites (specifically the Telegraph crossword site, and there was at least one more but I forget which). When I had this problem, I racked my brains as to why and the only change I had made to my computer was installing this software. So I removed it and problem solved. I don't know what was wrong, but I found no other reason why I was having difficulty with the websites in question. But I now have the virus again.
Last night I tried to install Malwarebytes again and going to the website got me to install Spyhunter 4. However I couldn't install it last night. This morning I have managed to get it installed and it has identified the threats on my computer but won't get rid of them unless I pay. Since I am in Germany, where they don't like credit cards, and I can't get US sites to accept my bank details, does anyone have a clue how I can find free software to get rid of the virus? Obviously this will be a short term fix and my current Virus checker hasn't identified this particular threat, so I have to do something longer term. I will get help, but am unable to do anything before next week as this is the weekend, of course. I am not a technical person, and trying to uninstall things manually seems a bit too risky to me as I don't want to mess up my computer completely by doing something wrong.

Usually, if you can't install malwarebytes or any other antivirus software is because the virus, in this case System Progressive Protection, monitors the system and blocks either predefined processes or stops every single process initiated by other software. It doesn't matter if it's an antivirus program or let's say Task Manager.
