Any ideas how long you are supposed to initially charge a mobile phone up for when you first get it? I've heard a variety of answers ranging from 8 hours to 16 hours.

The manufacturer's recommendation would be in the accompanying manual.
A typical Lithium Ion battery requires an initial charging time of a much longer duration than it's subsequent recharges. Also, these batteries have a longer life if you recharge them often and not allow them to fully discharge.
