I prefer the smaller 7" screens 'arry. The Google Nexus 7 is excellent. Very fast for everything especially gaming and films.
All the Apps most people would ever want.
Using the Kindle app, reading is as good if not better than the Kindle.
I don't store much on mine, so the 1gb is good value at £159

I've cancelled my pre-order for the Fire HD since I discovered that it comes with built-in adverts (apparently, US buyers have the option to pay $15 to turn off the ads., but not UK buyers).
The Blackberry Playbook is incredible value at £130 for the 64GB version. If you Google for reviews, make sure that they are for the current version which is a vast improvement on the original.
More expensive, but much more versatile than either of those, though, is the Google Nexus.

The ipad is a great machine and they are releasing an ipad mini at the end of this month, there are a lot of tablets out there, I think the nexus 7 is a good tablet as well. I suppose it depends on your uses.
not sure about the kindle fire, I use the kindle app which pretty much negates the need for a dedicated kindle reader. Personally I would go to currys or pc world and have a play with the tablets and see which one floats your boat x
