iPad question

I have just updated to iOS 6 and now have iMessage but the mobile phone number on it is not mine. I have checked my apple id and put the correct number in but it is still not showing up. I have searched the net but have got no where. Any help gratefully received, thanks.

Do you mean it isn't the number attached to your phone? I'm assuming you have a 3G iPad, if so the number will be that assigned to the 3G SIM I would think. You can receive iMessages on multiple email addresses on one i device but only on the number on the SIM in that device. The only way to handle it I have found is to get people using iMessage to only address you via an email address.

Thank you, do t know what iMessage is but my ancient iPhone number is not the one showing up on either my iPhone or the new iPad. Just makes me feel incredibly dim that I can't sort it out.
