Xbox

reason being?!?
the xbox is more powerful, i.e. has better graphics abilities etc. it also has a built-in hard drive so you don't have to buy memory cards, and it has some great games on it that you can't get on a PS2.

however, the PS2 has more games (though maybe not more "good" games), it plays DVDs out the box, and it's got a smaller footprint.

So it depends from which angle you're at as to which one is "better."
The reason is, that is my opinion.  And it answered the question you asked.

Alright Kerplunk I should have put 'and why?' my mistake!

i have had an PS2 and XBOX from the days they came out and xbox wins it for me everytime,

The xbox has a slightly smaller range of titles although u wouldnt notice that, but the titles seem a lot more professional and try to cover a lot more areas than PS2, also Xbox has been taking a lot of PS2 games such as Grand Theft Auto and converting it to there machine and often with slightly better graphics or extras due to the bigger power advantage.

The cost of the games are similar between them so no obvious difference there, and as for DVD playback, well the PS2 u have to use a joypad to make the DVDs work  unless u pay for an extra remote control, and XBox has to have a remote control bought to just get it to work, however in my eyes this is a small thing as well with dedicated DVD Players now less then 30.....

....another thing is if u want to go online and play against people on other countries. Xbox is regarded as having the best online system with a wealth of options and with no need to use memory cards due to a built in hard drive this means more content can be downloaded whereas PS2 is a little way behind in this area.

The hard drive on an Xbox for games playing is plenty in size (over 60 gmaes for mine and it still hasnt made a dent on the disk space yet) and the prices of them are cheap now. HOWEVER....

Xbox has ceased production and by October or so there wont be any on the shelves as Microsoft is readying itself for Xbox360 (there new console) that is backwards compatible with old Xbox games. PS2 will still be on sale for some time yet as PS3 wont be on sale until approx May next year and even then PS2 may still be sold for a further 18 months after it.

My advice is either grab an Xbox now, or wait and try and get an Xbox 360 when it is released in november

Thanks everyone Xbox it is then !!

Hmm. I guess towards November then prices of Xbox will crash as everyone tries to ditch theirs to get hold of the new 360.

How hard is it to setup for xbox live? Do you pay msoft a fee? Can you just use your broadband connection?

Don't answer this, you'll just tempt me.

PS2 emotion engine chip has sever chips built into it, so it doesn't need to run slow, it's got stuff to draw polygons, stuff to calculate and loads of other stuff too.
I have both. Xbox is more powerful, and has lots of good PC Games on it. Has a hard disk, so no memory card. But PS2 plays DVDs straight out of the box. And has Final Fantasy. So it wins.

definitely xbox.

i also have both and xbox is far better.

roughly the same cost but the 1st thing u have to do with a ps2 is buy a mem card....and then another and another........whereas xbox already contains 1000+ mem cards !

also xbox plays games in 5.1 which the ps2 doesnt and is graphically far superior.ok ps2 plays dvd's out of the box but for a 20 or less so does the xbox.

online play thru xbox is also vastly superior and will go from strength to strength in the next year or so with the introduction of video chat and other new features.

ps2 has mnay more games but for me it is a case of quality over quantity every time.

xbox live u need a credit card, and u have to pay 39.99 a year at present to be on xbox live however u can use any broadband connection to get connected to it.

The best console is the one that plays the games you prefer. End of story.

If you don't know which games you prefer, then you should start looking for information about games, not consoles.

Now there are lots of people who will tell you such console is better, for strange reasons or even for no reason at all (e.g. Kerplunk ) because it's like football teams: they have a favorite one but it is not relevant to you at all.

My favorite console is the GameBoy Advance, which can't play DVDs , has no harddrive, no powerful graphics or anything. So all the technical reasons exposed previously by other people are not really important. It's the games that matters.

The XBox is better, purely because it uses newer technology. It was released way after the PS2 was and so had a huge advantage of a) knowing what the PS2 was capable of and b) having access to newer, better, faster hardware. Despite these two HUGE advantages, Microsoft only managed put something out marginally better than the PS2 and then had to lose 70 on every single sale of it to compete.

The real question should be PS3 or XBox 360? PS3 I reckon.
Game cube forever!

there is a interview going about from japanese game developers about there thoughts having to design and make games for the three new consoles, Xbox360, PS3 and Nintendo Revolution, and all seem to follow the same trends,

PS3 - very powerful high end but has it got what it needs to help them develop the games to suit its high end? Sony may be on the backfoot a little by not making it the best for developing new games and offering new features, developers want new things to add to games and not just new fancy graphics which is what Sony is pushing with this console.

Nintendo Revolution - Nowhere near enough details to developers yet, and probably as it wont be released until 2007 now and even nintendo knows that whatever they decide on now to match or beat the other 2 consoles will not be good enough in 2007 so may hold off the details for some time yet, but are developing different things such as a new controller known as the "big gun" that is unlike anything ever seen before!

Xbox 360 - Maybe not as powerful as first thought in terms of graphics compared to PS3 but is much more solid in every other area that developers crave for, such as RAM and the ease of use of the processors. More a evolution of old Xbox than a brand new innovation.Although developers wont be shouting out loud about the graphical capabilities of it against PS3 they have a fantastic developers kit that makes games making not only easy peasy but fun too, and possibly able to make the same PS3 game in 50% of the time. And they see XBOX LIVE as the real future. Many developers already see this as the great untapped area that will really propel games and develop new ideas players will want there games for.
