Portable DVD player through TV or DVD via laptop through TV (using VGA convertor box)

very little difference but depending an your laptop you can connect with a hdmi cable

You haven't said much about what inputs and outputs are available, but if the portable player has Scart or S-video out (and the telly has matching inputs), and the laptop only has VGA, you are better better off with the portable. Using a converter just add another potential noise/distortion source into the playback chain.
