Windows Back-Up And Restore

Each week I use the above prog. to keep my back-up.There was a green line that told me how far the prog had progressed but recently this hasn't appeared,can anyone please tell me how to get this visual aid back again??
Next question....some times when I close down I get to the screen showing "SHUTTING DOWN" but it doesn't. Is there any way of prompting this action other than switching off the power,as I have to do now??? Thanks!
