If this is a legitimate (purchased) copy of Avast and a legitimate license file you should contact the company and ask them to help rectify the problem.
Thank you daffy654, yes it it a legitimate copy and license running from August 2012 - August 2013. Interestingly it has worked OK since August up 'till now, this problem has only arisen today.
daffy654: thank you for your responses, went to Avast Support Centre FAQ's and found the appropriate answer. Followed their instructions (somewhat laboriously as I'm a technophobe) and seems that it's now fixed. Fingers crossed. Again, thank you for your help.
