Likewise, if the TV has an Audio input port you can also get yourself a corresponding audio cable to connect Laptop audio output to TV input. Its usually a 3.5mm jack plug at each end, but check the TV. If not the Audio will play through the Laptop sound system

It depends upon what outputs the laptop offers, and which inputs the TV accepts.
If they've both got HDMI sockets then, unsurprisingly, an HDMI lead will do the trick. They're about a tenner in Tesco or Maplin, far dearer than that in many computer or hi-fi stores, or around £3 or £4 in discount stores like Family Bargains. (A 'Which?' survey found that the cheap ones are just as good as the dear ones).
If your laptop has only got a VGA output then you need a signal converter, not just a cable. They're not cheap!

Your TV will, somewhere among its menus, a way of telling it that you want it to display a signal from an external source (rather than displaying a signal from its built-in tuner). You need to locate that option and put it into place.
(If in doubt, tell us which TV you've got and we'll try to find an answer for you).

Having read the manual (pages 16 & 17) my instructions remain the same. The 'Source' button, however, is labelled with a circle which has an arrow going into it. That, according to the picture on page 12, is at the top-left of your remote control:
