That is a feature your friend has enabled on his smartphone.
You cannot switch it off, but you can make sure you don't have it enabled in your FaceBook smartphone app if you don't want it.

How do I turn it off my phone then please?
Depends on your phone and the FaceBook app you are using.
It will be in settings - privacy; maybe settings - apps.

If your timeline doesn't show your location you don't have that feature enabled in any case.

You can't stop seeing your friends' location when they send you a message.

Ok thank you
This is the feature in facebook mobile , you can ask your friend to keep it off in his/her settings. You can't do anything for this issue.
On iPhone it is possible to set "Location Services" permissions on a per-app basis.

Settings | Privacy | Location Services

One switch for blanket on/off
Multiple per-App switches but only after the App has been used at least once and had occasion to interrogate the GPS location.

For youngsters or others who are vulnerable but curious enough to muck around in the settings menu, it is possible to lock out access to the privacy submenu, which thus protects the location services submenu.

I have not needed to learn how to do that, myself but it will come under umbrella of Parental Controls settings.
